Today, U.S. Representative Susan Wild (PA-07) voted to pass H.R. 4, the Voting Rights Advancement Act, critical legislation to restore the full strength of the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA). The legislation follows the Supreme Court Shelby v. Holder decision, which eliminated the VRA’s ability to combat voter suppression and discrimination. Since this decision, at least 23 states have enacted voter suppression laws, including voter purges, strict ID requirements, poll closures, and curtailing of early voting hours.

Yesterday, the House passed U.S. Representative Susan Wild’s (PA-07) Improving Legal Services for Female Veterans Act to require the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide legal assistance to women veterans to help address some of their unique, unmet needs. Included as a key component of H.R. 3224, the Deborah Sampson Act, Wild’s bill would require the VA to establish a partnership with an experienced organization that would help women veterans access services to assist with eviction and foreclosure, child support, and child care.

This morning, U.S. Representative Susan Wild (PA-07) voted to pass H.R. 4670, the Simplifying Student Loans Act and H.R. 4327, the Enhancing Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Through Campus Planning Act, through the House Education and Labor Committee. Both bills are included as key components of the College Affordability Act (CAA), a comprehensive overhaul of the higher education system to lower the cost of college for students and families, improve the quality of higher education through stronger accountability, and expand opportunity by providing students the support and flexibility they need to succeed. The CAA also includes pieces of H.R. 4577, the Expanding Disability Access to Higher Education Act, introduced by Wild.

Yesterday, U.S. Representative Susan Wild’s (PA-07) bill, H.R. 4334, the Dignity in Aging Act, unanimously passed the House of Representatives. This bipartisan proposal reauthorizes the Older Americans Act (OAA) and increases funding for vital programs that help seniors live independently and with dignity. The bill included a provision that added “screening for suicide risk” to the definition of “disease prevention and health promotion services,” a provision that Wild championed and unanimously passed the House Committee on Education and Labor last month.
