Rep. Susan Wild Statement on Agreement Between Israel, United Arab Emirates

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Susan Wild (PA-07) released the following statement regarding the agreement reached yesterday between Israel and the United Arab Emirates:

“The announcement that Israel and the United Arab Emirates will move toward normalized ties is an important step forward for both countries, the broader Middle East, and the world. I want to recognize Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the United Arab Emirates government for their collective achievement.

“This historic agreement follows the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt in 1978 and the Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty of 1994. As Americans—regardless of political affiliation—we should be proud that, in all three cases, the United States played a pivotal role in reaching agreements to deliver greater security, peace, stability, and prosperity to the Middle East.

“It is also significant that, as part of this agreement, Israel has agreed to suspend plans to declare sovereignty over areas across the West Bank. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas should take this opportunity to immediately restore security cooperation with Israel and return to the negotiating table to make progress in obtaining a two-state solution—the only viable path toward a better future for Israelis and Palestinians.

“When I was elected to represent the people of Pennsylvania’s 7th District, I committed to serving as an independent-minded Representative—opposing the Administration where I disagreed with its actions, but always willing to find areas of common ground. This agreement is a prime example of the latter.

“As a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I am particularly proud of the consistently bipartisan work we do to advance the United States’ interests and values across the globe. Over the weeks and months ahead, I look forward to working with my colleagues, Republicans and Democrats alike, to build on this impressive announcement and strengthen our nation’s standing around the world.”
