Rep. Wild Statement on Deadly Mosque Attacks in Afghanistan

October 15, 2021

Representative Susan Wild (PA-07), member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement on the recent terrorist attacks on Shiite mosques in Afghanistan.

"I want to convey my profound sorrow regarding the attacks against Afghanistan's Shiite community this week, with two suicide bombings targeting Shiite mosques in the span of just a single week.

"Attacking people in their place of worship is a crime against humanity, and both of these terrorist attacks constitute a stark reminder that the conflict in Afghanistan is not over for the Afghan people. There is a collective responsibility to protect Afghan citizens, especially women and children, from these horrific attacks by Islamic State-Khorasan and all extremist groups.

To constituents across our local Muslim community in the Greater Lehigh Valley who have reached out to me to express their outrage and sadness regarding these events: Please know that I share your grief and that I stand shoulder to shoulder with you. Whether around the world or right here at home, I will always speak out against the threat of violence that has far too often targeted innocent people based on their faith or ethnicity.

"As a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I will continue defending the fundamental right of people everywhere to gather in their place of worship without fear of violence. Those responsible for this heinous crime must be found and held accountable, and I will do everything within my power as a member of Congress to ensure that some measure of justice is served. "
