Rep. Wild Statement on Protests in Cuba
Representative Susan Wild (PA-07), member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement on protests in Cuba:
“I stand in solidarity with the thousands of Cuban citizens who have been courageously defying the forces of repression to make their voices heard.
“The protests we are seeing across Cuba represent a historically large and widespread outpouring of public dissent on the island. The fact that so many are mobilizing despite the clear risks of doing so—in the face of an authoritarian government that has stifled critical expression and gatherings for decades—is a testament to the urgency of this moment.
“At this time of hardship for the Cuban people, I also want to join House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC) Chair Gregory Meeks and other colleagues in calling on the Biden Administration to do its part to alleviate suffering on the island by providing relief to the Cuban people and reversing counterproductive measures that deny assistance to those who need it most. Only by building ties with the Cuban people, not undermining the needs of everyday citizens, can we realistically hope to one day see a democratic future in Cuba.
“As a member of HFAC, I will always support the universal rights of people everywhere to assemble, protest, and petition their government and to organize for a future of dignity—free from coercion or intimidation. The authorities in Havana have the responsibility to choose dialogue over repression—heeding the call of the Cuban people to make needed reforms to create a freer and fairer Cuba for all.”
