Rep. Wild to Visit Puerto Rico Amid Earthquake Recovery Efforts
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Susan Wild (PA-07) will travel to Puerto Rico with a bicameral, bipartisan delegation of 9 members of Congress from February 13 - February 16 to learn more about the island’s recovery efforts following their recent earthquakes.
“Our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico need – and deserve – help to recover from recent earthquakes,” Wild said. “After hearing firsthand accounts of the severity of this devastation from Puerto Rican leaders in my community, it became clear that I needed to get on the ground and see how Congress can best help. I’m looking forward to hearing from folks about how we can help communities restart school operations, repair damaged roads, address energy needs, and more. We must do everything we can to provide the relief and support that these communities need for recovery.”
Wild and the delegation will meet with FEMA officials as well as top government officials involved with response and recovery. Throughout the visit, Wild will visit sites impacted by Hurricane Maria and the recent series of earthquakes and speak with survivors and local mayors struggling with disaster recovery.
In January, Wild hosted an emergency roundtable on the ongoing earthquake recovery efforts in Puerto Rico, alongside a local delegation of community leaders returning from the island. The conversation centered on eyewitness accounts of what is happening on the ground and suggested Congressional action to help continue the release of vital aid. Last week, the House of Representatives passed a $4.67 billion supplemental spending measure to aid Puerto Rico in its disaster recovery efforts.
